I hear the shocked gasps already.
The frightened murmurs.
I can see the unbelieving looks.

I’d like to say, Heather is by far my favourite blogger. I have read her blog for years, it’s the most charming, witty, funny blog I’ve ever read. It’ll make you cry, laugh, or melt you. I’ve seen Leta grow up, refreshed her twitter and blog in the leading days to Marlo’s birth. I’ve smiled at Chuck, and watched as Coco settled in. I’ve smiled sweetly at Jon as her husband and a general nice guy. It may be lame, but damn Heather can write so you feel like you really really know her. You feel like she’s writing just to you, or to her close friends and you’re apart of that. Except then you see her 2000+ comments on a single blog and her 1,000,000+ followers on Twitter, and you kinda feel like she couldn’t give a rats arse about you. And truthfully, why should she? You’re a droplet in her ocean of fans.

She blew me away once again, she showed her appreciation for her fans in a simple @reply. And I know she’ll never read this. But, dude, or dooooode you kick some arse. (Who got my Dooce joke? Huh? Go read her FAQs) Thanks for the laughs, the one sided friendship, the encouragement to write about my depression and eating disorder on my blog. And thanks for giving some love to a little droplet in the ocean.

I don’t think I’ve mentioned this in previous posts, I’m a vegetarian. I have been vegetarian now for four or five years. Between a few conversations about my vegetarianism in the last few weeks and PETAs new marketing campaign I thought I’d voice my opinion.

Firstly, I like PETAs ideals and stance, I hate how they do it. The shock factor is great once in a while, but use it as often as they do and it loses its effect. It also makes people dislike the organisation (even those who agree with them.) The picture below is the campaign I’m speaking about.

Why am I vegetarian? A mixture of reasons. It’s not 100% because I don’t think humans should eat animals, it’s mostly because if we want to that’s fine it’s the inhumane way we treat them before we kill them and how we kill them. (And even when we don’t eat them, example: caged hens)

I don’t think I personally could fathom eating a cow or pig anymore. However, I don’t mind if other people want to and do. It’s my horror at how humans, who are intelligent and resourceful (and developing) can still reason as to why we treat animals the way we do.

I also think (maybe hope is a better word) that meat eaters (live with one, all my friends and family are) don’t disagree with my horror of the way animals are treated. Some may be uninformed or not thought about it but I don’t think any one thinks the way they are treated are top notch. I like to think I never try and force my ideas down my friend’s and family’s throats (unless they pay me out and then I have to say I get nasty), I do like to advise them to watch a video or two on the topic before they judge my choice.

Are you a vegetarian who disagrees with eating animals even when treated humanely? A meat eater who is still horrified at treatment of animals? Or have no issue with the way animals are treated? Before you answer please have some idea on how animals are treated prior to death and how they are killed. (Information on animal treatment here and here).

I realise everyone has probably thought and heard enough about this, but I think I need to vent a little bit. Yes, this post is about Michael Jackson.

As a lot of people have stated, hearing about his death was one of those moments, where you remember exactly where you are and what you were doing. I was getting ready to go to my exam, I walked from our kitchen to the lounge where the boy was sitting on the couch reading Twitter on his iPhone. He looked solemn. I can’t remember if I ask him what was going or if he just told me. I could not fathom it. I still don’t think I have, everytime I say the line it kinda hits me all over again.

I didn’t think he had the impact he did on my life, I’ve always loved him and defended him, but I didn’t think I’d be so bothered about it. However, I’ve also grown up with his music. I remember dancing to “ABC” when I was in primary school at a school dance. I remember my sister having the “History” album. The Thriller film clip is something that I’ve just always known. I grew up thinking the grabbing your crotch and screaming was something every singer did…
I was born in early 1989, Michael was just finished his ‘Bad World Tour’, he already owned Neverland, and had seven solo albums. Dangerous was released when I was just 3. We always had music in our house, from Meatloaf, to Eric Clapton, to The Beatles, to Elvis. And yes, probably mainly thanks to my sisters’ influence I truly grew up with Michael’s music.

However, being born when I was, the only news of him I ever heard was reinforcing his nickname of “Wacko Jacko.” I knew about his court cases, and hanging his kid over the balcony. I never really knew any of the good stuff. Until now, when he died I read his Wikipedia page properly. I read news articles, I saw how many artists were influenced by him, I saw how many awards he’d won, and what kind of success he had when he was younger.

I realised, this is how my mum felt when Elvis died, she’d grown up with him, and then he died. I grew up listening to Elvis, I loved him, listened to his music, watched his movies, watched clips and once told my parents how mad I was at him for dying before I was born, how dare he get himself into so much harm before I could see him perform. So all I can hope, is that my kids will grow up listening to Michael’s music, and love him like I loved Elvis. And maybe, one day tell me how mad they are that him for dying before they were born.
