You are a radio star.

Though I wasn’t into music as a younger person, as in I listened to AM Radio when going to sleep. I did grow up listening to Elvis, The Beatles, The Monkees, and Meatloaf. My friends used to talk about the top 40 and I would have no idea what they were talking about. My first CD was Aussie Songs for Aussie Kids or something to that effect. Around that time, I can remember Spice Girls, and thanks to my sister Michael Jackson, and Hanson. Then, later I liked Hi-5 (apparently I regressed in music taste), and my sister listened to Slipknot and Tool. I liked pop, and that’s about all I knew, however I’m always surprised by how much I learnt about music through my sister’s blaring CDs.

Gotta keep it down honey, lay your back on the line
’cause I don’t care about the money,
Don’t be wasting my time,
You need less speed, get off my case,
You gotta slow it down baby, just get out of my face.

The first of my embarrassing songs, is definitely Stop by Spice Girls. This was year four for me, and I loved them so much. In my class at school, we formed our own copy cat Spice Girls, we’d play the CD at lunch time and stand outside our class and do the actions. I admitted this in high school once when one of my fellow Spice Girls were with me, to my amusement a lot of my friends had done the same in their own primary schools. It suddenly didn’t seem so lame, just being a kid and having fun. And yes, I can still sing all the songs and do all the actions.

She’s got tattoos, and piercings
She likes Minor Threat she likes Social Distortion
My girl’s a hot girl
A hood rat who needs an attitude adjustment

Next is Riot Girl by Good Charlotte. I’m sure most people would classify this as an embarrassing song, however I don’t because this introduced me to non-top 40 music. I’m sure when you hear Good Charlotte you don’t think, indie band, as obviously they aren’t. However, their first album (self titled) wasn’t extremely popular, and I was listening to their second before it got big. Now they’re top 40, but I still like to think they started my quest to better music.

Come home late, I know you’re sick of working
You’re feeling down because your head is hurting
So we don’t talk
Oh no no no no

And then, I discovered the Internet. This band got suggested to me, and I still love this song. Laughing City by Eisley. I love downloading EPs, keeping up to date with a band and getting their stuff without the need to listen to radio. I think I’ve only ever be able to push this band onto two other people, no one else seems to like them. At least they’ll stay off the Top 40 charts.

They both go to all of the same clubs
Where everyone takes all the same drugs
And talks about how they’re ’so fucked up’
They try to get up and dance
But they’re all wearing spray on pants
It was a sight to be scene
I wonder who they’ll be next week

I became a music snob somewhere between getting my own taste, discovering the Internet for music, and hating the top 40. I listen to this band since their first EPs, I’ve been to their gigs, starting at The Gov and ending at HQ. I was given a beer from the bass player, and had a fun chat about being a vegan to the lead. As I’m sure most of you know Spray On Pants by Kisschasy. I still love the band, so I’ll happily look like a person who only loves pop-punk when played in the top 40. I do like their old stuff better than their new stuff.

Avalanche is sullen and too thin
She starves herself to rid herself of sin
And the kick is so divine when she sees bones beneath her skin
And she says:
Hey baby can you bleed like me?
C’mon baby can you bleed like me

Doodle takes Dad’s scissors to her skin
And when she does relief comes setting in
While she hides the scars she’s making underneath her pretty clothes

Bleed Like Me by Garbage was one of the first songs I related too. I’ve been there, done that, and lived to listen to the song. It’s a song that will still make me tear up if I’m having a bad day, and I find relief in it.

Use me as you will
Pull my strings just for a thrill
And I know I’ll be okay
Though my skies are turning gray

I will never let you fall
I’ll stand up with you forever
I’ll be there for you through it all
Even if saving you sends me to heaven

Your Guardian Angel by Red Jumpsuit Apparatus is the same as the above. Sometimes you just need to hate someone, when you still love them. Ah, young love how it affects life.

I heard you on the wireless back in Fifty Two
Lying awake intent at tuning in on you.
If I was young it didn’t stop you coming through.
Oh-a oh
They took the credit for your second symphony.
Rewritten by machine and new technology,
and now I understand the problems you can see.

This is by far my favourite song of all time, and that is Video Killed The Radio Star by The Buggles and no, no other cover version is better. The song is fun and kooky, and is just the best. It reminds me of bad new year eve parties, bad nightclubs, long study sessions, and my first few conversations with the boy. It however, only just beats I Touch Myself by The Divinyls, and Bette Davis Eyes by Kim Carnes. Usual favourites songs considering the rest of my list? Unfortnately, that’s how I am, I love some Louis Armstrong, and some Haydn, and some Rod Stewart.

To get even more confused, head to my last.fm, how random my plays are could make me cry. Also, Josh did a similar themed post, go on over and read.

Your music startles and confounds me, but the last paragraph contains enough fantastic stuff that I feel I can understand you again

“I do like their old stuff better than their old stuff.” – from the Kisschasy paragraph. Which do you like better? =p

    Love the new blog design

True varied music taste is hard to find these days … looks to me like you’ve got it although I could debate whether Hi-5 and the Spice Girls can be included there!!

Oh, and if you haven’t seen it, http://www.anythingbutdown.com/2009/07/buggles/ is my 5yo son’s tribute to Buggles…
