When I had my blog I’d write about the most pointless rubbish. I’d find a silly news story on the internet and make up some stupid joke, or I’d get a picture and make up a story to go with it. I wrote a couple of trip reports, some reviews of things I bought and found interesting (like crumpet toast), and did a few music reviews, as well as end of year top album lists (which got a few hits!). It was all over the place, really. I don’t do anything exciting either so I really had to push myself to find stuff to write about. The only area I didn’t go into was my personal/family life. Not too often, anyway.

I have no advice for you, as boring is my middle name. Actually it’s Ben, Boring would actually be a less boring middle name.

I think the sites you like and the writers you love have the ability to manufacture drama (a skill we were talking about the other night). They take their mundane lives and find the humour and the conflict and the tension and they share it in a way that the reader can recognize, but would never think to articulate. I’m sure your arguments with the boy might make interesting reading, or the silent confrontaions with judgemental old women in carparks.

Can’t offer you much advice either! Part of me knows that I write for me and nobody else, but I still can’t help wanting some validation in my life, knowing someone else has read a blog post and left a comment to say it was funny or to relay a similar story. I know the validation is part of what makes me who I am. I’m not sure I can change that. I need to get out of that mind-set somewhat and get back to writing just for me – trying not to wonder whether a visitor will come back and read again.

I’ve been told I write well and can make any story funny in some way. I’m not sure that’s the case, but ah well …

I don’t have a lot of material to wite about on a day to day basis – it’s part of the reason I’ve shut the blog down twice before. There is the occasional story that pops up, like the mean neighbours, the trip to the hospital after an allergic reaction to pizza, etc, but it is hard to find new material.

My life is quiet as well – I like it that way. Drama is too stressful!! Any inspiration I do get is from other blogs. I try not to write about the boring day-to-day stuff these days, although it will get mentioned as part of another post. I have been trying to find some topics to post on regularly just to keep the blog up-to-date – eg, something like the Music Monday theme. There are a few sites out there that offer topics to cover (eg, Manic Monday).

Hmmm … ideas for you? Most embarrassing moment? Gigs you’ve been to? Famous people you’ve met?

I don’t know if you find my blog any good, but it’s about as random as can be. One day I’ll be writing about a holiday post, the next I’ll be reviewing something, the next I’ll be reflecting on my latest pathetic injury.

I think you need to stop thinking of the blog as being personal aka about you. I think you need to find things that will also relate to who your readers are. For example, we just bought an awesome new coffee machine at work and I’m in the middle of drafting a review on my blog. While my blog isn’t bout coffee machines or product reviews, I think it would be interesting for the people who read my blog. They might be in the market for a coffee machine, or might be interested to see how these things work. So why not write about things you find online that you think might interest us? Or if you bought something? It doesn’t always have to be about your personal experiences.

Oh and btw – since I started following your blog I’ve always found every post you’ve written to be incredibly entertaining. Some have been deeply personal, and I find it fascinating to be allowed to see inside the depths of someone else’s mind (thanks for sharing it with us). So I think you need to just trust yourself when you find something to write about, I’m sure you’ll write something worthwhile.
