Something I didn’t think that was supposed to continue past High School? Drama! However, when you partner up with someone with an ex-wife and a daughter, it’s bound to happen.
I’ve fought a long time to have any communication with the ex-wife. In fact I fought for so long, she forgot I was fighting for it, and now thinks the fact we talk was her idea. It’s something that with anyone else, it would frustrate me, I ended up looking like the immature one, and she gets to look mature.
I’m glad we talk, it’s hard to be step mum like here in my house, and yet have no communication about her outside the house. I would just found out what the boy is told. I do the toilet duty most times, so I’d end up passing information to the boy to tell her, and he would relay it back. Now I can send a sms and expect one back. To think at her mum’s house it might be “let’s go to daddy and elle’s house”, not just “let’s go to daddy’s house”.
On the down side, I’m now the go-to-girl when the boy and her have troubles. Which, is interesting, and odd. I try to calm the waters and move it along. Even with the odd situation, I would rather this way, then back to no communication. It’s like I’m actually part of the little one’s life completely, not just in the corner of her life.
The other thing I didn’t expect, was my bond with the little one to jump in bounds after our week together. Maybe it wasn’t just because of that week, maybe it was just her getting older and us having more time just the two of us. When I get her out of bed, she hangs on to my neck a little longer, she knows how to give me Eskimo kisses (fairly sure I’m the only one who does that with her). She asks to sit on my lap while we watch some ABC kids, and happily says bye to daddy when we’re going anywhere just us two. And, sometimes even though daddy is right there, she’ll run to me for a hug or a high five.
So yeah, it is pretty drama filled, but I love it, and wouldn’t choose anything else.

NAWWWWW. I’m glad things can be civil between you. Nothing worse than simmering animosity just because things didn’t work out as expected. Better for the little one too.
